BLACKPINK
BLACKPINK
BLACKPINK are one of the most successful girl groups in modern pop music. The South Korean group was formed by YG Entertainment and officially debuted on 8 August 2016 with the single album *Square One*. The four members are Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa, each bringing a different background, voice and performance style to the group.

The group was created through YG Entertainment’s trainee system, where young performers trained for years in singing, dancing, language skills and stage performance. Britannica notes that YG selected members with international appeal: Lisa is from Thailand, Rosé was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Jennie lived in New Zealand for part of her childhood, and Jisoo is from South Korea.

BLACKPINK quickly became known for a bold “girl crush” image, mixing pop, hip-hop, EDM and fashion-led visuals. Their debut songs “Boombayah” and “Whistle” introduced their confident style, and later releases helped them reach audiences far beyond South Korea.

Five of their most popular or best-known songs include:

* “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du”
* “Kill This Love”
* “How You Like That”
* “Pink Venom”
* “Shut Down”

Like many major pop acts, BLACKPINK have faced controversies. In 2020, a scene in the “Lovesick Girls” video involving Jennie in a nurse-style outfit was criticised by Korean nurses’ groups, and YG later said it would edit the scene. The same year, the group also drew criticism in China after members were shown handling a baby panda during filming, leading to concern over animal protection rules.

Their achievements are major. *Born Pink* reached number one on the Billboard 200, making BLACKPINK the first K-pop girl group to top that chart. The same album also became the first by a K-pop girl group to reach number one on the UK Official Albums Chart.

They have also broken YouTube and Guinness World Records milestones, performed at Coachella in 2019, and returned in 2023 as the first K-pop act to headline the festival. BLACKPINK have won major awards including MTV honours and remain one of the most globally recognised girl groups of the 21st century.
Destiny’s Child
Destiny’s Child
Destiny’s Child were one of the most successful R&B girl groups of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The group is best remembered in its final lineup of Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, although earlier members included LeToya Luckett, LaTavia Roberson and briefly Farrah Franklin.

The group began in Houston, Texas, in the early 1990s under the name Girl’s Tyme. Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland were part of the early lineup, and the group appeared on the television talent show *Star Search* in 1992. After several changes, they eventually became Destiny’s Child and signed with Columbia Records in the late 1990s.

Their breakthrough came with the 1999 album *The Writing’s on the Wall*, which included major hits and helped define their sound: sharp harmonies, R&B production, and songs about relationships, independence and confidence. The later trio lineup became especially famous after the 2001 album *Survivor*.

Five of their best-known songs include:

* “Say My Name”
* “Survivor”
* “Independent Women Part I”
* “Bootylicious”
* “Bills, Bills, Bills”

The group also faced public controversy. In 2000, LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson were replaced by Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin, which led to legal action involving the former members, the group, management and Sony Music. Rolling Stone reported that Luckett and Roberson settled their lawsuit in 2002. Farrah Franklin also left the group in 2000, after only a short time as a member.

Destiny’s Child achieved major awards and chart success. According to Billboard, they had four number-one songs on the Hot 100 and ten top-ten hits. The Recording Academy lists Destiny’s Child with two GRAMMY wins and nine nominations. “Say My Name” won Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best R&B Song at the 2001 GRAMMY Awards.

Their impact lasted beyond their active years. They helped shape the sound and image of modern girl groups, mixing strong vocals, coordinated fashion and themes of female independence. Even after disbanding, their songs remain widely recognised, and their influence can still be heard in pop and R&B music today.
KATSEYE
KATSEYE
KATSEYE are a global girl group created by HYBE and Geffen Records. The group is based in Los Angeles and officially debuted in 2024. The six members are Sophia Laforteza, Manon Bannerman, Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Megan Skiendiel and Yoonchae Jeung.

The group was formed through *The Debut: Dream Academy*, a survival-style project that introduced trainees from different countries. The final lineup was chosen after months of training, performances and fan voting. Their story was later shown in the Netflix documentary series *Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE*, which gave viewers a closer look at the pressure behind the group’s creation.

KATSEYE released their first single, “Debut,” in June 2024, followed by their first EP, *SIS (Soft Is Strong)*, in August 2024. Their concept combines Western pop with K-pop-style training, choreography and visual presentation, making them different from many traditional girl groups.

Five songs they are known for include:

* “Debut”
* “Touch”
* “Gnarly”
* “Gabriela”
* “Gameboy”

One of the group’s biggest controversies has involved Manon Bannerman. In February 2026, HYBE and Geffen announced that Manon would take a temporary hiatus from group activities to focus on her health and wellbeing. However, some fans questioned the situation after she was absent from performances and promotional material, including Coachella-related activity, and after reports that she removed KATSEYE from her Instagram bio. Because of this, fans debated whether the hiatus was truly temporary or whether there was more happening behind the scenes.

It is important to say clearly that, based on available confirmed information, Manon has not been officially announced as removed from KATSEYE. Reports from outlets such as People stated that she remained on hiatus, and the official statement described it as temporary. Anything beyond that remains speculation unless confirmed by Manon, HYBE, Geffen or KATSEYE’s official channels.

KATSEYE’s achievements have grown quickly. Their music videos and performances have brought them a large online following, and their international lineup has helped them attract attention outside the usual K-pop market. They have also been recognised by the Recording Academy, receiving GRAMMY nominations for Best New Artist and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Gabriela.”

Although KATSEYE are still early in their career, they have already become one of the most discussed new girl groups in global pop. Their future will likely depend not only on their music, but also on how clearly the group and label communicate with fans.
Spice Girls
Spice Girls
The Spice Girls are one of the most famous girl groups in pop history. The British group was formed in London in 1994 and became known for colourful personalities, catchy songs and the slogan “Girl Power.” Their members were Melanie Brown, known as Scary Spice; Melanie Chisholm, Sporty Spice; Emma Bunton, Baby Spice; Geri Halliwell, Ginger Spice; and Victoria Adams, later Victoria Beckham, Posh Spice.

The group began after auditions were held to create a female pop act that could compete with the boy bands dominating British music at the time. The original project was connected to Heart Management, but the members later moved away from that team, took more control of their direction and signed with Virgin Records.

Their breakthrough came in 1996 with “Wannabe,” a fast, energetic debut single that turned them into international stars. Their first album, *Spice*, followed soon after and helped establish them as a major part of 1990s pop culture. They were not just marketed as singers, but as five distinct characters fans could identify with.

Some of their best-known songs include:

* “Wannabe”
* “Say You’ll Be There”
* “2 Become 1”
* “Spice Up Your Life”
* “Viva Forever”

The Spice Girls also had their share of controversy. Some critics argued that their “Girl Power” message was too commercial, because it was strongly linked to branding, merchandise and media promotion. The biggest shock came in 1998 when Geri Halliwell suddenly left the group during their peak period, which caused huge public attention and changed the band’s future.

Despite this, their achievements were remarkable. They scored multiple UK number one singles, sold tens of millions of records worldwide and became one of the best-selling girl groups ever. At the BRIT Awards, they won major honours including British Single and British Video recognition, and in 2000 they received the Outstanding Contribution to Music award.

The Spice Girls remain influential because they changed how girl groups were presented. Their image mixed friendship, fashion, humour and independence, making them a symbol of 1990s pop and inspiring later female groups around the world.
The Pussycat Dolls
The Pussycat Dolls
The Pussycat Dolls are an American girl group known for combining pop, R&B, dance and performance-heavy choreography. The most famous recording lineup included Nicole Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton and Kimberly Wyatt. Nicole became the group’s main lead vocalist, while the others contributed vocals, dance and stage presence.

The group began in Los Angeles in 1995 as a burlesque-style dance troupe created by choreographer Robin Antin. After gaining attention as a live performance act, the concept was later developed into a mainstream pop group. By the early 2000s, the Pussycat Dolls had signed with Interscope/A&M and moved from club-style performance into the music charts.

Their big breakthrough came in 2005 with “Don’t Cha,” featuring Busta Rhymes. The song became a huge international hit and reached number one on the UK Official Singles Chart. Their debut album, *PCD*, followed the same year and helped make them one of the biggest girl groups of the 2000s.

Five of their most popular songs include:

* “Don’t Cha”
* “Buttons”
* “Stickwitu”
* “When I Grow Up”
* “Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)”

The group also faced controversy. A common criticism was that Nicole Scherzinger received much more vocal and media focus than the other members, which led to public discussion about the balance inside the group. In 2017, former associate Kaya Jones made serious claims about the group’s environment; Robin Antin and representatives for the group strongly denied those allegations. Later, a planned reunion tour became tied up in a legal dispute between Scherzinger and Antin, which People reported was settled confidentially.

Their achievements were significant. The Recording Academy lists the Pussycat Dolls as having one GRAMMY nomination for “Stickwitu.” They also earned major chart success around the world, with Official Charts naming “Don’t Cha” as their biggest UK single.

The Pussycat Dolls remain remembered for their confident image, glossy videos and strong dance performances. Even with lineup tensions and controversy, their influence on 2000s pop culture is clear.
TLC
TLC
TLC are one of the most important girl groups in R&B and pop history. The group was formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1991 and became famous for mixing smooth vocals, rap, hip-hop attitude and socially aware messages. The classic lineup was Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas.

The group’s early roots involved a planned female trio with a bold, streetwise image. T-Boz and Left Eye became part of the project first, and Chilli later joined after the original third member, Crystal Jones, left. Their name was kept as TLC, with T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli each taking a nickname that fitted the initials.

TLC’s debut album, *Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip*, arrived in 1992 and introduced their colourful, playful style. Their second album, *CrazySexyCool*, made them global stars, combining R&B, funk, pop and hip-hop with a more mature sound. Later, *FanMail* gave them another major era of success.

Five of their best-known songs include:

* “Waterfalls”
* “No Scrubs”
* “Creep”
* “Unpretty”
* “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg”

The group also experienced difficult and controversial moments. In 1994, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes pleaded guilty after setting fire to the home of her then-boyfriend, American football player Andre Rison. TLC also shocked fans by filing for bankruptcy in the mid-1990s, despite huge record sales, which drew attention to how recording contracts could leave artists with less money than the public assumed.

TLC won major awards and achieved lasting commercial success. The Recording Academy lists the group with four GRAMMY wins and twelve nominations. Their wins included recognition for *CrazySexyCool*, *FanMail*, “Creep” and “No Scrubs,” showing their strength across albums and singles.

Tragically, Lisa Lopes died in a car accident in Honduras in 2002. T-Boz and Chilli later continued performing as TLC while honouring her legacy. Today, the group are remembered as one of the best-selling and most influential girl groups of all time, especially for songs that mixed confidence, vulnerability and messages about self-respect.
